Tribute to a famous Missourian

Like many of you, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Rush Limbaugh. Her radio show, and the conservative opinions and ideas expressed through it, have had a profound impact on my life. On Monday March 1, I had the honor of paying homage to this son of the Show-Me State. Below is the text of my question of personal privilege honoring Rush Limbaugh on the floor of the Missouri Senate.

“Mr. President, I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to a great Missourian who recently passed away and was buried in St. Louis last week – Rush Limbaugh.

“Born in Cape Girardeau, Rush Limbaugh began his broadcasting career at the age of 16, working as a disc jockey for a local radio station. Throughout Limbaugh’s career, he has helped revolutionize our media and political landscape. I believe his passion has inspired millions of Americans to do their best and kept our country on track for a bright future.

“The Rush Limbaugh Show,” broadcast on over 600 stations, listened to by 27 million people each week, was America’s top rated national radio show. Limbaugh was widely recognized as one of the early voices of the conservative movement. In 1992, President Ronald Reagan thanked him saying:

“For all that you do to promote… conservative principles… you have become the No. 1 voice of conservatism in our country.

A bronze bust of Rush Limbaugh can be found in the Hall of Famous Missourians.

“Limbaugh has received the Marconi Radio Award for Union Radio Personality of the Year five times. He was inducted into National Radio and the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2012, Rush Limbaugh was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians, and his bust can be seen in our Capitol today.

On February 4, 2020, in the wake of the news of his advanced lung cancer, Rush’s life and career were recognized during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, where Rush received the most high civilian honor of our country, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Rush Limbaugh has proven that standing up for what you believe in takes strength to stand up and unwavering courage to push back the rapidly growing “culture of cancellation” around us.

“I admire and respect Rush Limbaugh’s relentless boldness to speak the truth. His passion, his inspiration, his audacity to speak will be missed. So today I ask that the members of this body stand up and celebrate the incredible and impactful life of such a great Missourian, Rush Limbaugh.

I had the honor of speaking in the Missouri Senate and discussing Rush Limbaugh’s legacy. He always said he had a “talent lent by God.” From my perspective, Rush has had a profound impact on our country and the way we talk about politics. He will be dearly missed, and I pray his family will find solace in the fact that he has entertained and inspired countless Americans and made a difference in their lives.
