WASHINGTON, May 7 / TASS /. US President Joe Biden has extended the unilateral sanctions against Syria for another year, according to a statement from the White House on Thursday.
The notice refers to various restrictions that Washington successively imposed on Damascus between 2004 and 2012. Specifically, these sanctions include the freezing of the assets of certain individuals and legal entities in the United States and a ban on certain categories of American goods and services from being exported to Syria.
“The actions and policies of the Syrian regime, including in relation to chemical weapons and support for terrorist organizations, pose an unusual and exceptional threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States. As a result, the national emergency declared on May 5 became 11 , 2004, and the measures [adopted in light of this] must remain in force beyond May 11, 2021. Therefore I am continuing the national emergency declared in relation to the actions of the Syrian government for one year, â€the communication said.
The communication also stresses that the Syrian leadership allows for “brutal violence and human rights abuses and abuses”. “The United States urges the Assad regime and its supporters to end its violent war against its own people, to pass a nationwide ceasefire, to provide unhindered humanitarian aid to all Syrians in need, and to find a political solution in Syria in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, “added the White House.
“The United States will consider changes in the Syrian government’s policies and actions to determine whether this national emergency will continue or end in the future,” concluded the US government.
