How to smile, where to put a hand, in which direction to look: Young Vietnamese social media users grab a popular influencer course on how to pose for the perfect photo.

In communist Vietnam, where 70 percent of the population is under 35, classes are particularly popular with young women.

Instructor Pham Kieu Ly – who has hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok – set up the $ 130 course in Hanoi after women asked her how to look best in photos, mostly for social media.

In the lessons, budding amateur photographers also learn to take snapshots themselves.

Ly told AFP that she saw women in class who “wanted to learn how to pose and take photos to make their jobs easier while others wanted to build confidence”.

Since the first course in September 2020, Lys’ day and a half tutorial has garnered a sizeable following and attracted around 500 people from a variety of professions, including online traders and real estate agents.

“My goal is the image of a successful business woman,” says 29-year-old Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan, who works for an insurance company and also wants to improve her photography skills during the course.

Other participants said they believed beautiful photos would help them sell products on Facebook, which has more than 53 million users in Vietnam – more than half the population. The platform has become a crucial marketing tool for local businesses.

Nguyen Huong Tra, 29, who runs a homewear shop that sells candles and scented oils online, said, “I used to pay little attention to my pictures or my social media followers, but then I realized they were important to me Shop.”
