If you’re going for a traditional monochrome look of layered whites with accents of black, it is more important to choose whites with the same base tones. For example, try layers of all warm, yellowish white tones such as Resene Half Spanish White, Resene Merino or Resene Half Blanc. Or opt for cool white tones such as Resene Black White, Resene Alabaster or Resene Poured Milk.
There are also white tones for in between – such as Resene Half Titania, Resene Rice Cake or Resene Quarter Wheatfield, which can work with either cold or warm white tones, as they change more strongly with changing light.

If you’re unsure of how or where to start layering the shades of your chosen monochrome color, there are a few guidelines that might help:
The 60-30-10 rule. This divides a room as a percentage of the color usage. Use your main color across 60 percent of the room. This is the first impression of your monochrome room, so anyone who walks in will register it as a blue room or a red room – regardless of your choice of color.
Add by decorating 30 percent of your room in your secondary color (if it’s easier, think of half your primary color). In a monochrome room, this will be the same color, but darker or lighter in a shade or two.
Then add highlight accents in an accent tone that is significantly darker or lighter than your base color.
When calculating percentages, don’t forget to factor in your decor, design features, fixtures and fittings, and even the floor. You can even use your color on the ceiling for a full commitment to the subject. Keep in mind that darker hues on the ceiling can make a room look smaller. That doesn’t have to be bad – just keep it in mind.
For example, in a yellow room you could try walls, carpets, large pieces of furniture and some pillows in sun tones like Resene Corn as the main color. Add fresh accents with paler Resene Quarter Moonbeam and accents in the bold Resene Spotlight. This would be a nice combination in a nursery, or even a fun kitchen or bathroom.
