BERLIN

Germany on Wednesday reintroduced coronavirus blocking measures in two northwestern districts following local outbreaks related to a meat processing factory.

The North Rhine-Westphalian authorities have announced that schools and public facilities such as cinemas, fitness studios and bars in Gütersloh and Warendorf will be open until at least 30.

Gatherings of more than two people in public were also banned.

According to local media reports, over 1,550 employees at the Gütersloh meat factory of Germany’s market leader Tönnies have tested positive for COVID-19.

The first investigation showed that the factory’s cooling system, which circulated the air without effective filtering, allowed the virus to spread rapidly among employees.

On Wednesday, the health authorities in the Gütersloh and Warendorf districts stepped up tests to identify people infected with the virus and stop its spread.

The four German states of Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony have announced that they will limit travel from the two counties that have become a new epicenter of the disease.

Meanwhile, neighboring Austria issued a travel warning on Wednesday and urged its citizens to avoid unnecessary trips to the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
