State election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: SPD wins clearly

More than a million people have elected a new state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The citizens voted with an overwhelming majority for the SPD and Prime Minister Manuela Schweig.

The SPD has apparently won the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to ZDF’s initial forecasts. Prime Minister Manuela Schweig’s party received 38.2 percent of the vote. “It was a wonderful evening for our country,” said the SPD politician in front of the supporters of her party.

The second strongest force was the AfD with 17.8 percent, the CDU was able to convince 14.2 percent of the voters. That is the worst result of the party in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The left returned again to the state parliament. The party sees 9.9% as the extrapolation rate. The FDP and the Greens cause a surprise and should also move into the state parliament. The Greens are currently at 5.9 percent, the FDP at 6.0. The ARD extrapolation sees greens at more than six percent.

Manuela Schwesig kept possible alliance options open for the evening. On Sunday in the ARD, Schwesig said that party committees would discuss on Monday evening and see “who to talk to”. There are three important points for future government formation. On the one hand, there must be a “stable majorityâ€, the SPD must be able to advance its concerns and “reliable partnersâ€, said Schweizig. More on this topic here.

The extrapolation result would theoretically suffice for the continuation of the alliance of red and black, which has ruled since 2006. But even an alliance of the SPD and the left would have a slim majority in parliament. The formation of a so-called traffic light coalition with the FDP and the Greens will also be possible.

Around 1.32 million eligible voters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were invited to vote in the Bundestag and Landtag. According to the state election commissioner, 455 candidates from 24 parties and nine individual candidates ran for 71 seats in the state parliament.

In the last state election in 2016, 30.6 percent of voters voted for the SPD. The Alternative for Germany party received 20.8 percent of the vote. The CDU lost 19.0%, while 13.2% voted for the left. The Greens and the FDP have missed their entry into the Schwerin state parliament.
