Hong Kong suspends poultry meat imports from Germany and Japan

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene has announced that in light of notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and Japanese authorities of outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state, Germany and highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza in Nara prefecture, Japan respectively, the CSA ordered the trade to suspend the importation of meat and poultry products ( including poultry eggs) from the above-mentioned areas with immediate effect of public health protection in Hong Kong.

A CSA spokesperson said that, according to the Census and Statistics Department, in the first nine months of this year, Hong Kong imported about 2,500 tons of frozen poultry meat and about 880,000 poultry eggs from ‘Germany; and about 50 tonnes of chilled poultry meat, about 4,300 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 200 million poultry eggs from Japan.

“The CSA has contacted the German and Japanese authorities regarding these issues and will closely follow the information published by the OIE and the competent authorities on the outbreaks of avian influenza.
