Former Memphis police officer Patrick Ferguson has been charged with murder after allegedly kidnapping and killing a man on duty, ABC News reports.
Last month it was reported that the 29-year-old former police officer reportedly shot and killed 30-year-old Robert Howard after forcing him into the back of his patrol car. He was later charged with the kidnapping and killing of the man and has since been charged with the death of Howard, who was reported missing by his girlfriend in January. According to ABC News, Ferguson has been charged with particularly serious kidnapping, evidence manipulation, corpse abuse, official misconduct, and official repression.
According to Shelby County’s Attorney General Amy Weirich, he is currently being detained without commitment. When arrested earlier this year on suspicion of the kidnapping and murder of Howard, he was immediately released. Authorities said Ferguson drove to Howard’s house on duty, held him at gunpoint, half a mile away and fatally shot him.
Records show he was looking for information on how to clean up a crime scene and get rid of a corpse at around the same time. It’s not clear what relationship Howard and Ferguson had, but Memphis police said they knew each other.
Weirich said Ferguson confessed to investigators and also admitted that he had enlisted the help of 28-year-old friend Joshua Rogers. Howard’s body was recovered by authorities on January 10th. “Nobody is above the law,” said MPD director Michael Rallings after Ferguson’s arrest. “To know that a Memphis police officer, someone with an oath of protection and service, made the decision to commit this terrible crime is devastating.”
